Johan Kritzinger, Director of Customer Success at Crozier, reflects on an inspiring week of art in New York

There was a buzz in the air at the spring fairs in New York. As always it was fantastic to catch up with so many clients and colleagues who were in town. For over a decade, I have been participating in the NY fairs and openings, and in the accompanying late nights and early starts, I found this year to be particularly exciting, with more energy than I have seen in some time. Here are a few of my highlights:

Elizabeth Dee and her team at Independent yet again created an extraordinary event. A fair where the artist, their story, and their medium are genuinely at the center. Independent has built a vibrant community of galleries and dealers that celebrate depth, experimentation, and care. I’m proud of Crozier’s long-standing partnership with Independent and the thoughtful way they provide a stage for emerging artists. I really enjoyed the installation by Lucia Hierro presented by Swivel Gallery, with the larger than life ‘bodega’ like soft-sculpture.

Frieze New York offered a different glimpse into the artworld with the largest galleries from around the world presenting their artists' work in the Gallery section with more solo presentations in the Focus section. I really enjoyed seeing Dr. Ester Mahlangu’s work presented at Jenkins Johnson Gallery. Her ability to bridge the traditions of the Ndebele people with contemporary artwork is simply inspiring.

Gagosian's solo presentation of works by Jeff Koons was an absolute show stopper. All the sculptures are from Koons’ own collection, and the artist participated in every stage of the exhibition process - from the initial selection, to the design of the booth, to the layout of the installation. It was such a bold statement.

Alongside the art fairs, the galleries have also been opening their new presentations with some really powerful shows being presented. When I step out of our offices in Chelsea, the energy is palpable. Collectors, curators, gallerists, and artists have gathered from around the world, filling galleries, fairs, and studios with dialogue and discovery. There’s been a noticeable quality and ambition in the work on view and a real sense of appreciation for the stories behind the art, the materials, and the people who make it all happen. ‘William Kentridge: A Natural History of the Studio’ at Hauser & Wirth was a real stand out for me due to personal history, but there were so many more. Whether it be work from the legacy of Martha Diamond, Murakami paintings inspired by Hiroshige, or Alicja Kwade’s installation.

As we move from the fairs into the major spring auctions, the focus shifts, but the energy takes a new shape. These auctions are not only a bellwether for the market but a continuation of the conversations we’ve been having all week about value, legacy, and the evolving narratives of art.
